Japanese culture is very reserved and polite, to the point where the politeness expectation itseld can becime a prison of sorts for some. Hostility was definitely shown to the "barbarians" throughout the beginning of the show but the trade of samurai is methodical discipline (and loyalty ofc) above all else. Racism absolutely exists and its ugly as always but simply done differently, not in blind rages or outbursts. Viking culture and their exposures as well hsitorically to other races is so different to this time period of japan and were already exposed to catholicism and other entities etc....
